South Korea resumes transit of used cars to Kyrgyzstan via Vladivostok

The port of the South Korean city of Sokcho has resumed transit deliveries of Japanese used cars to Central Asian countries via Vladivostok after 10 year-break, the authorities of the city of Sokcho reported.

From August to October, about 525 cars were brought to Sokcho. On October 10, a transport ship with this used cars departed for Vladivostok, where it arrived on October 12. From there, the cars are sent to Kyrgyzstan by land.

The export is carried out by the company Glory Mobility, which is planning a second shipment of 450 cars in October.

The port of Sokcho began exporting used cars in 2003 with a small volume – only 33 cars. By 2008, exports reached a peak – about 11,600 cars were sent through the port. However, in 2009, after Russia introduced high customs duties, the volume of exports fell sharply: in 2010, only 1,138 cars passed through Sokcho. By 2013, the situation had improved and exports had risen to 28,178 vehicles.
