In the parliamentary elections held on October 27, the Liberal Democratic Party (UzLiDeP) emerged victorious, winning 64 out of the 150 seats in the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis, Uzbekistan’s parliament. The results were announced by Zayniddin Nizamkhodjaev, Chairman of the Central Election Commission (CEC), at a press conference.
Currently, the UzLiDeP holds 53 seats in the parliament. The recent elections introduced a mixed electoral system for the first time, with 75 deputies elected through a majoritarian system (single-member constituencies) and 75 through a proportional system based on party lists.
The elections saw an increase in representation for the Ecological Party, which gained one seat, moving from 15 to 16 in the new parliament. Meanwhile, the National Revival Party (Milliy Tiklanish) suffered the largest setback, dropping from 36 seats to 29. The Social Democratic Party “Adolat” (“Justice”) will have 21 seats, down from 24, while the People’s Democratic Party of Uzbekistan (PDPU) will hold 20 seats, a decrease from 22.
Voter turnout was robust, with more than 15mn of the nearly 20mn registered voters participating, including over 140,000 Uzbeks living abroad. The turnout rate reached 74.72%.
Since the establishment of a bicameral parliament in Uzbekistan in 2005, the Legislative Chamber and the Senate have operated under a framework where all 150 seats in the lower chamber are distributed among the five officially registered political parties. The current Legislative Chamber, formed in December 2019, is set to complete its term at the end of 2024.
