The trade turnover between Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan has seen an increase, reaching $867.8mn from January to September 2024, according to recent data. This marks a 4.5% growth from the $830.3mn recorded during the same period in 2023.
Turkmenistan ranked among Uzbekistan’s top ten trading partners for the first nine months of this year, stressing the growing economic ties between the two nations. However, a shift in trade dynamics has been observed.
Uzbekistan’s exports to Turkmenistan totaled $27.4mn, marking a sharp 48.3% decline from the $129.4mn exported in the same period last year.
On the other hand, Uzbekistan’s imports from Turkmenistan surged to $780.6mn, an 11.3% increase from $700.9mn in the previous year.
These figures come against the backdrop of Uzbekistan’s overall foreign trade performance, which reached $48.2bn in the January–September period, reflecting a 7.7% y/y increase from $44.7bn in 2023.
In September, UZ-SAT, a prominent satellite communications provider, and Turkmen Hemrasy, the operator of Turkmenistan’s national communications satellite, unveiled a new partnership to broadcast a selection of Uzbek TV and radio channels through the TurkmenAlem52°E satellite.
Under this agreement, UZ-SAT will gain access to one of the satellite’s transponders on its eastern beam. This collaboration will facilitate the transmission of over 20 Uzbek TV and radio channels in both HD and SD formats, reaching audiences across Europe, Russia, and Central Asia.
