The assassination attempt, which occurred on October 26, 2024, targeted Komil Allamjonov, former press secretary to the president of Uzbekistan, and his driver. Two masked attackers armed with pistols and a Kalashnikov rifle ambushed their Range Rover. However, a malfunction in their weapons prevented the attack from succeeding.

Subsequent investigations identified the attackers as Bislan Rasaev and Shamil Temirkhanov, Russian citizens of Chechen origin. Both suspects had entered Uzbekistan illegally. After their initial plan failed, they reportedly fled the country, leaving the operation to be taken over by local accomplices, including Javlon Yunusov and Shokhrukh Akhmedov, who allegedly orchestrated a second attempt.

The assassination attempt has had significant political repercussions in Uzbekistan. Following the incident, Abdusalom Azizov, head of the State Security Service, was dismissed, along with several deputies. Experts interpret these changes as measures to strengthen internal security and address vulnerabilities.

Grashchenkov urged Russian authorities to take decisive action, emphasizing the need for cooperation with Uzbekistan.

“If these individuals are on Russian territory, we must assist the Uzbek side in resolving this case. My question to the competent authorities is: Are steps being taken to locate these individuals and consider their possible extradition? I hope the answer is yes. Partnership is not only about economics but also about mutual support in addressing threats,” Grashchenkov stated.

He also highlighted the growing economic ties between the two nations, noting that trade turnover reached a record $8.5bn in 2023, underlining the strategic importance of their alliance.
