Tajikistan intends to attract Saudi ACWA Power to build solar power plants

Tajikistan plans to attract investments from the Saudi energy company ACWA Power to build solar and wind power plants, the press center of the country's Ministry of Energy and Water Resources (MoEWR) says.

These issues were reportedly discussed at a meeting of the Minister of Energy and Water Resources, Daler Juma, with the Regional Director of ACWA Power for Central Asia, Abid Malik, which took place in Dushanbe on March 13.

The main topics of the negotiations were bilateral cooperation in the development of renewable energy sources and attracting the company's investments for the construction of wind and solar power plants in the country.

The Tajik minister emphasized that Tajikistan aims to achieve full energy independence by 2027, and new capacities based on “green” energy will play a key role in this process.

Abid Malik, for his part, expressed the interest and readiness of ACWA Power to cooperate with Tajikistan, according to the MoEWR press center.

The estimated potential of solar energy in Tajikistan is about 25 billion kWh / year.  This potential is not used, if not to take into account some of its use for water heating.

The potential of solar energy in Tajikistan is reportedly quite high.  The country is located between 36°40′ and 41°05′ north latitude.  Meteorologists call this zone a “golden belt” of sunshine.

According to the Agency of Hydrometeorology of Tajikistan (Hydromet), the duration of sunshine in the country is 2100-3166 hours per year, and the number of sunny days per year ranges from 260 to 300.  This provides great opportunities for the use of solar power as an alternative.

Headquartered in Saudi Arabia, ACWA Power is a developer, investor, co-owner and operator of a portfolio of power generation and desalinated water production plants with a presence in 13 countries across the Middle East, Africa, and Central and Southeast Asia.  ACWA Power's portfolio of projects in operation and development has an investment value of USD 85.7 billion, and a capacity of 55.1 GW of power and 8 million m3/day of desalinated water.

Its energy portfolio includes thermal power plants, solar power plants (photovoltaic (PV) and concentrated solar power (CSP)), wind, water desalination plants, and green hydrogen projects.
