Kyrgyzstan to receive credit and grant worth 61.7 million euros for irrigation infrastructure development from EU and EBRD

A ceremony of signing the grant and credit agreements was held on March 17. President of the Kyrgyz Republic Sadyr Japarov and the European Commissioner for International Partnerships Jozef Síkelaattended the ceremony.

Agreements were signed on the projects “Improving the Efficiency of Water Use in Chui Region” and “Climate-Resilient Water Supply in the Kyrgyz Republic Tranche 2” between the Kyrgyz Republic, the European Union and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

Under these agreements, the European Union and the Special Shareholder Fund of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development provide grant funds to Kyrgyzstan on a gratuitous basis for a total of 19.63 million euros, and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development provides a credit for a total of 42.16 million euros.

It is planned to carry out construction, modernization and rehabilitation works to ensure the development of irrigation infrastructure and its resilience to climate change.

The projects will meet the needs of the Kyrgyz Republic in the rehabilitation of irrigation facilities located in Jalal-Abad, Naryn and Chui regions.

It is expected that farmers in rural areas, in particular in Jalal-Abad and Naryn regions, will receive additional water supply to lands on an area of ​​about 9,260 hectares.

The executing agency for the projects is the Water Resources Service under the Ministry of Water Resources, Agriculture and Processing Industry of the Kyrgyz Republic.
