Kazakhstan’s renewable energy sector expands by over 30% in 2023

Kazakhstan’s renewable energy sector experienced notable growth in 2023, with the total volume of green energy produced reaching 6.6bn kWh, marking a significant 31.1% increase from the previous year. This overall expansion was driven largely by the wind energy sector, which saw a substantial rise in production, generating 3.7bn kWh—a 63.3% increase compared to the previous year.

Contributing to the upward trend, small hydropower plants produced 949.1mn kWh of electricity, reflecting a 16% y/y increase. This steady growth in small-scale hydropower output underscores the ongoing enhancement of these facilities within the country’s energy mix.

However, not all renewable sources followed this positive trajectory. Solar energy production slightly decreased by 1.5%, resulting in 1.8bn kWh in 2023. Additionally, biogas energy production faced a more significant downturn, with output dropping by 52.1% to 1.4mn kWh.

Despite these declines, the overall increase in green energy production indicates a continued shift towards more sustainable energy sources in Kazakhstan.
