Kyrgyzstan will build more than 50 new hydroelectric power stations by 2030

The power supply system of Kyrgyzstan dates back to the Soviet period; the country still receives energy mainly from hydroelectric power plants built 60-70 years ago. The head of the information policy service of the presidential administration of the Kyrgyz Republic, Dayyrbek Orunbekov, recalled this.

Кыргызстан до 2030 года построит более 50 новых ГЭС

According to him, from independence until 2021, no large-scale reforms were carried out in the energy sector. The industry has accumulated debts, the equipment is outdated, and in three decades only one unit was launched at the hydroelectric power station «Kambar-Ata-2».

However, in recent years the situation has begun to change. A large-scale reform of the industry has been launched, the construction of new hydroelectric power stations has begun, and the goal — energy independence of the country has been set.

In 2024 alone, dozens of small and medium-sized hydroelectric power stations were put into operation, including «Bala-Saruu», «Kainama», «Kok-Art», «Ysyk-Ata». Preparations continue for the construction of a key project — hydroelectric power station «Kambar-Ata-1» with a capacity of 1860 MW, which should significantly increase the country’s generating capacity.

Special attention is paid to small hydroelectric power plants. Thanks to efforts to attract investors and create favorable conditions, dozens of projects are being implemented throughout the country. Many stations have already been launched in a short time, and some are being prepared for commissioning.

Orunbekov published a list of objects expected for launch:
