Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, during his official visit to Uzbekistan, pointed out the absence of a Russian-language inscription on the “Mourning Mother” (Memorial Grieving Mother) monument in Samarkand, according to a Russian media outlet.
The monument, which commemorates fallen soldiers, currently bears inscriptions in Uzbek and English. While touring the site, Lavrov remarked to a guide,
“There is an inscription in English here, but I didn’t see any in Russian. Mother is the most sacred being,” as quoted by TASS. Uzbek Foreign Minister Bakhtiyor Saidov was also present during the exchange.
The Russian Foreign Ministry later shared photos of Lavrov attending a flower-laying ceremony at the monument, accompanied by members of the Uzbek honor guard.
Lavrov is on a two-day official visit to Uzbekistan. On April 23, he met with President Shavkat Mirziyoyev in Samarkand. According to the presidential press service, Lavrov conveyed greetings and best wishes from Russian President Vladimir Putin to the Uzbek leader at the start of the meeting.
The discussions focused on advancing bilateral ties, including deepening the Uzbek-Russian strategic partnership and alliance, and reviewing the progress of high-level agreements.
