The implication of Israel-Iran War for Central Asia

Uzbekistan has approved a site layout scheme for the construction of low-power nuclear power plant (LPNPP), according to the country’s Agency for the Development of Nuclear Energy (Uzatom). The project will be implemented in the Farish district of the Jizzakh region.

The decision was announced following a joint meeting on May 6, chaired by Presidential Adviser on Energy Security Alisher Sultanov. The session brought together the operational headquarters and scientific and technical council established by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev to oversee the development of the project.

The meeting reviewed the progress of work carried out under a contract signed in May 2024 with Russia’s Atomstroyexport, a subsidiary of Rosatom. The participants evaluated the results of site engineering surveys, design stages, and preparations for construction, with an emphasis on compliance with deadlines and international standards. The layout plan was approved after confirming the site’s seismic stability and environmental viability.

According to Uzatom, ongoing environmental monitoring includes seismic, meteorological, and hydrological assessments, which are critical for shaping the project’s safety and technical documentation.

Officials also discussed logistical preparations, including land allocation, external infrastructure, and the construction and assembly base. These tasks will require coordination with regional authorities and private contractors.

The potential for using Uzbekistan’s natural uranium resources in nuclear fuel production was also discussed. Experts noted this would enhance the project’s economic efficiency and contribute to the country’s energy independence.
