A large-scale program to update and develop water infrastructure is being launched in Kazakhstan, aimed at increasing the efficiency of using valuable water resources and meeting the needs of the agricultural sector. The Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation is actively developing design estimates and feasibility studies for 214 projects for the construction and reconstruction of hydraulic structures.
A significant part of these efforts will be aimed at increasing water storage capacity: 21 projects are dedicated to the construction and reconstruction of reservoirs, which together will be able to accumulate 1.8 billion cubic meters of water. In parallel with this, 180 projects are aimed at radically modernizing the country’s irrigation network. As part of these projects, it is planned to reconstruct and implement automation systems on 243 canals, the total length of which is 4024 kilometers. The remaining 13 projects cover other types of waterworks, complementing the integrated approach to water reform.
«All projects provide for efficient use of water resources and include elements of automation. Their implementation will improve the water supply to 577 thousand hectares of land. It is planned to complete the development of documents for most projects by the end of this year»,– said Vice Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Erbolat Ibraikhanov.
