Correction: Import duty on mobile phones in Tajikistan set at €20, not 20%

Asia-Plus has issued a correction regarding its June 17 article titled “Starting July 1, Tajikistan to impose 20% customs import duty on mobile phones.”  The original publication inaccurately reported that the new customs duty would amount to 20% of the device’s value.

The error stemmed from a misinterpretation of Government Decree No. 346, dated June 10, 2025.  The decree states that the figure “0” in an annex to Decree No. 470 should be replaced with “20.”  The editorial team mistakenly understood this to imply a 20% tax rate.

However, a review of the annex reveals that the unit of measurement is in euros, not percentage.  It specifies that customs duties are set in euros and payable in national currency at the official exchange rate of the National Bank of Tajikistan.

As a result, starting July 1, 2025, the correct import duty for any mobile phone — including smartphones and feature phones — will be €20, calculated according to the National Bank's exchange rate on the date of customs processing.

Asia-Plus sincerely apologizes to its readers for the mistake and confusion caused by the earlier report.

Editor’s Note: Additional questions regarding the new customs policy have been submitted to the Customs Service of Tajikistan for further clarification.
