European technologies have helped in the modernization of the Kairakkum hydroelectric power station

In the Sughd region of Tajikistan, a large-scale project continues to update the Kairakkum hydroelectric power station – one of the key energy infrastructure facilities in the country. The progress of work on the modernization and installation of modern equipment was inspected by the head of the region, Rajabba Ahmadzoda, the press service of the regional administration reports.

Европейские технологии помогли в модернизации Кайраккумской ГЭС

The Kairakkum hydroelectric power station, consisting of six hydraulic units, is an important link in the republic’s energy system. The last of its units was put into operation back in 1957 with a design capacity of 21 MW. Over 68 years of service, the main plant equipment became physically and morally obsolete, which led to a significant reduction in production capacity – to 12 MW per unit.

The comprehensive modernization program started in 2019 with the support of the President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon. Over the past five years, it has been possible to completely update three hydraulic units – №4, №5 and №6. As a result of the work carried out, the capacity of each of them increased from 19 to 29 MW, which significantly increased the total electricity generation.

Both local and foreign specialists, as well as development partners, took part in the implementation of the project. Key equipment for the station, including components for the turbine hall, turbine control systems, excitation system transformers and modern monitoring and control systems, was purchased and supplied from leading European countries.

An important stage of the modernization was the replacement of the open switchgear with a voltage of 220/110 kV with a modern closed SF6 switchgear. The new system significantly improves operational safety and efficiency of electricity transmission to consumers.

The head of the Sughd region gave a positive assessment of the progress of the project. He instructed the responsible persons to ensure the high quality of all remaining work and make the most efficient use of the capabilities of the newly installed equipment for a stable energy supply to the region.
