Kazakhstan's electricity deficit reaches 2GW at peak hours - PM Sklyar

The electricity deficit in Kazakhstan at peak hours is 2 GW, and it may reach 7GW by 2030, Prime Minister of Kazakhstan Roman Sklyar said on October 8 during the government session.

“Without taking appropriate measures this figure may grow to 7GW, which is almost half of the current capacity,” Sklyar said.

In this regard, introduction of 6.7 GW of total generation is planned by 2028, including 700 MW will be introduced already this year. New CHP will be built in Kokshetau, Semey and Ust-Kamenogorsk, renewable energy facilities, steam gas plants will also be built in Aktobe, Aktau, Kyzylorda, Turkestan and other cities.

“It should be understood that we have committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2060. The gradual withdrawal of old coal capacities is inevitable. In this regard, the construction of a nuclear power plant is the only acceptable option. We have all the necessary conditions for this,” the First Deputy Prime Minister said.

Sklyar noted that the world already operates 415 nuclear reactors, and another 62 are under construction. Therefore, he is convinced that “the decision to build a nuclear power plant was dictated not only by necessity, but also by global trends in the use of peaceful atomic energy”.
