In Kyrgyzstan, the construction of the Orto-Tokoy hydroelectric power station, a strategically important facility for the country’s energy system, is gaining momentum. The Ministry of Energy of the Kyrgyz Republic reports that work at the facility, located near the city of Balykchy, near the Orto-Tokoy reservoir, is being carried out actively. This project, implemented by JSC «Chakan HPP», is designed not only to increase electricity generation, but also to increase the stability of the region’s energy supply.
To date, a significant amount of work has already been done. In particular, as the Ministry of Energy notes, a town has been built for builders, providing comfortable living conditions for specialists involved at the site. The necessary storage facilities for storing building materials and equipment have also been built, which allows optimizing logistics and ensuring an uninterrupted construction process. In addition, mortar and concrete units, expansion structures and power supply systems are functioning, creating the necessary infrastructure for the implementation of the project.
Particular attention is paid to the safety and reliability of the future hydraulic structure. The Ministry of Energy emphasizes that work has been carried out to strengthen the soil, which will prevent possible collapses and ensure the stability of the structure. For ease of transportation of materials and equipment, both temporary and permanent access roads to various construction projects have been equipped.
Currently, the main efforts of builders are focused on the key stages of construction of hydroelectric power stations. According to the Ministry of Energy, the development of the pit of the hydroelectric power station building has been completed by 10%, while 50 thousand cubic meters of soil have already been extracted. At the same time, a water supply derivation tunnel with a diameter of 5.4 meters – is being drilled 312 meters out of the planned 771. This tunnel will become an important artery that supplies water to the turbines of the hydroelectric power station. At the same time, the necessary equipment is being supplied, in particular, the suction pipe cones for three units have already been delivered. A road to the water intake through the crest of the dam is also being built, which will provide access to one of the most important elements of the hydroelectric complex.
The design capacity of the Orto-Tokoy hydroelectric power station is 21 MW, and the average annual electricity generation, according to the Ministry of Energy, will reach 75 million kWh. The general contractor for the construction is the Chinese company CHMC (China National Heavy Machinery Corporation), which has extensive experience in implementing such projects. Construction of the hydroelectric power station began in the summer of 2024, and completion of work and commissioning of the facility is planned for the first half of 2026.
