President Sadyr Japarov comments on closure of Kloop Media, freedom of speech
President Sadyr Japarov commented on the situation around closure of Kloop Media, freedom of expression and investigative journalism in an interview with Kabar news agency.
The Supreme Court earlier upheld the decision of two instance-courts on closure of Kloop Media.
The President said he learnt about closure from media reports. President Japarov said this decision will not affect freedom of speech in the country.
“For 30 years we have confused anarchy with democracy, rumors with freedom of speech. Now society is getting rid of this. We have had and will have freedom of speech. We will support anyone who speaks the truth. But anarchy, spreading rumors and false information is not freedom of speech,” the President stated.
When asked if closure of Kloop Media is related with their investigative reports, President Japarov replied: “Perhaps, they are closed due to their unilateral approach in investigations and discreditation attempts. Courts do not make decision for nothing. Haven’t you noticed often spread of biased, slanderous and false materials by them?”
The authorities are ready to support any impartial investigation, regardless of who conducts it, the President said. However, the President said coverage of all sides is necessary.
The President also mentioned journalist Bolot Temirov, author of investigative reports. The President said: “Bolot Temirov is like that dog that barks, but caravan is moving on. We do not pay attention to his investigations.”
