Kazakhstan is set to begin construction of three new regional airports in 2025, part of a broader initiative under the state tourism development program. This move aims to enhance connectivity and stimulate growth in the country’s resort areas.

The locations for two of the new airports have been finalized in the eastern region of Kazakhstan, specifically in East Kazakhstan Oblast, which shares borders with Russia and China. In his recent Address to the People, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev emphasized the need to “unlock the potential of the resort areas of Katon-Karagai, Zaisan, and Kendirli,” highlighting the importance of building passenger terminals and airports in these regions.

Transport Minister Marat Karabayev confirmed that the sites for the airports in Katon-Karagai and Zaisan have been selected and visited by his team on September 28.

The new airport in Katon-Karagai District will be situated between the villages of Katon-Karagai and Ulken Naryn, close to Soldatovo. Meanwhile, the Zaisan airport will be built on the grounds of the former Satpayev military airfield, replacing an existing airport that is deemed too outdated for modernization.

Initial plans for both airports include a 2,200-meter runway designed to accommodate regional aircraft, such as the De Havilland Dash 8-400, ATR 42/72, and Bombardier CRJ200. These aircraft will provide crucial links between the tourist destinations and major cities like Astana and Almaty. Future expansions may allow for longer runways, enabling the use of larger jets like the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737.

“The head of state has instructed us to construct air terminal complexes and airports, complemented by quality road infrastructure in the resort areas of Katon-Karagai, Zaisan, and Kendirli. We will start construction of all three airports in 2025,” the minister stated.

This initiative is expected to boost tourism, improve accessibility, and stimulate economic development in the targeted regions of Kazakhstan.
