The Ministry of Energy reported a boost in Kazakhstan’s petrochemical sector, with production volumes increasing 1.6 times compared to the same period last year. Energy Minister Almasadam Satkaliyev shared these findings during a government meeting on the progress of the fuel and energy complex for the first 11 months of 2024.
Oil and condensate production reached 80.5mn tons during the reporting period, accounting for 98% of the previous year’s figure. Major contributors included: Tengiz Field with 25.9mn tons (97.9% of last year), Kashagan Field with 15.8mn tons (92.8% of last year), and Karachaganak Field with 11.1mn tons (100.9% of last year).
Minister Satkaliyev noted that production declines stemmed from scheduled and unscheduled repairs, including a 50-day overhaul at Tengiz and a 21-day shutdown at Kashagan for equipment replacement. Oil production for the year is projected to total 87.8mn tons, with exports amounting to 63.2mn tons, or 98.3% of last year’s figures.
Natural gas production slightly increased to 53.8bn cubic meters, achieving 100.2% of last year’s output. Gas exports reached 5.4bn cubic meters (101.9%), while domestic consumption rose to 18.2bn cubic meters, reflecting a 9% year-on-year increase.
Other highlights included liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) production of 2.75mn tons, or 103% of last year, and petroleum product production totaling 12.3mn tons (101.7%), with motor gasoline and diesel fuel at 4.9mn tons each, showing growth of 2.1% and 4.3%, respectively. Aviation fuel production stood at 0.68mn tons, marking a 21.4% increase from last year. The ministry emphasized ongoing efforts to regulate fuel exports, including a ban on road exports of certain petroleum products.
A notable achievement was the production of 506,100 tons of petrochemical products, marking a 1.6-fold increase compared to last year. This surge highlights the sector’s growing contribution to the country’s industrial output.
Electricity generation reached 106.7bn kWh, a 4.7% rise year-on-year. Renewable energy continues to expand, with 148 facilities producing 6.4bn kWh over 11 months. Three new renewable projects with a combined capacity of 34.95 MW were completed, and five more facilities totaling 128.4 MW are expected by year-end. Minister Satkaliyev concluded by underscoring Kazakhstan’s commitment to strengthening its energy sector while balancing traditional resources with renewable energy development.
