In 2024, a $200 million financing agreement for priority projects in the country was concluded between Tajikistan and the Islamic Development Bank (IDB). Trend reports this. According to the Ministry of Finance of Tajikistan, this agreement was announced during a consultative meeting of IDB country office managers in Medina, Saudi Arabia. The event was attended by Majidi Yusuf Khairullo, First Deputy Minister of Finance of Tajikistan and the country’s alternative manager at the IDB.
The bulk of the allocated funds — $150 million — will be used to further develop the infrastructure of the Rogun hydroelectric power station (HPP). This large-scale project, located on the Vakhsh River, involves the construction of six power units with a capacity of 600 MW each. At the moment, two units have already been put into operation, and the third is planned to be launched in 2025. Once fully completed, the plant will generate more than 17 billion kWh of electricity per year, which will significantly strengthen Tajikistan’s energy potential and meet the growing demand for electricity.
The Rogun hydroelectric power station is considered by the project developers as a key project for the country, since it will provide electricity to almost 10 million people, solving the problem of chronic power outages in winter. In addition, about 70% of the energy generated by the station will be exported to neighboring Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.
