At a meeting in the UAE, the Chairman of the State Committee for Investment and State Property Management of Tajikistan, Sulton Rahimzoda, discussed with the Director General of the Abu Dhabi Development Fund, Muhammad Saif al Suwaidi, the possibility of attracting investment to complete the construction of the Rogun hydroelectric power station. Rahimzoda presented the country’s energy potential, emphasizing the importance of «green» energy, and called on the fund to invest in this project and other infrastructure initiatives.
Al Suwaidi noted the readiness of the Abu Dhabi Development Fund to consider investments in priority sectors of Tajikistan, including energy, emphasizing the fund’s rich experience in financing such projects. He expressed his intention to expand cooperation with Tajikistan.
The Rogun hydroelectric power station, being built on the Vakhsh River, will become the largest hydroelectric power station in Central Asia with a capacity of 3,600 MW. It will meet the country’s domestic needs for electricity and create opportunities for export to neighboring countries. However, the implementation of the project raises concerns among environmentalists due to the possible impact on the ecosystem and environment.
Environmentalists stress the need to carry out a comprehensive environmental assessment of the project in order to minimise its impact on nature. Particular attention should be paid to the conservation of biodiversity and the sustainability of the region’s ecosystems.
