Two women killed in separate domestic violence incidents in Tajikistan

Two tragic cases of domestic violence resulting in the deaths of women have shocked Tajikistan this June.  In separate incidents in the capital Dushanbe and in Farkhor district, Khatlon province both victims died after being severely beaten by close family members.

Husband arrested after wife dies from Beating in Dushanbe

In the capital, police from police station No. 1 in Dushanbe’s Firdavsi district arrested the 33-year-old Samandar Rahimzoda on suspicion of fatally assaulting his wife. According to the city police department, the couple had a history of conflict, the Dushanbe Police Directorate press center says.

The latest incident occurred on June 13. Authorities report that Rahimzoda initiated an argument and then severely beat his wife, Jamilya Sh., inflicting serious injuries.  She was taken to the hospital but died from her wounds.

Criminal proceedings have been instituted against Rahimzoda under Article 110 (3) of Tajikistan’s Criminal Code — intentional infliction of grievous bodily harm resulting in death.  If convicted, he faces five to eight years in prison.

Father accused of beating disabled daughter to death in Farkhor

Just days earlier, on June 10, another deadly act of violence occurred in Farkhor district of Khatlon province.  Authorities say the 60-year-old Saivali Nazarov beat his 25-year-old daughter, Shahnosa Nazarova, to death while intoxicated.  The victim reportedly suffered from a mental health condition and had a Category I disability.

According to the investigation, Nazarov used a wooden stick to strike his daughter repeatedly.  She died at the scene from her injuries.  The regional police department in Khatlon confirmed that the suspect frequently abused alcohol and had previously exhibited violent behavior toward his daughter.

Shahnosa’s mother died many years ago, and she was under the care of her father.

A criminal case has been opened against Saivali Nazarov under Article 104 (2) of Tajikistan’s Criminal Code — premeditated murder. He has been taken into custody and an investigation is under way.
