Tajikistan has enormous hydropower resources, but currently uses only 5% of these. This was stated by the country’s Deputy Minister of Energy and Water Resources Manuchehr Safarzoda during the 3rd International Conference «Prospects for the development of renewable energy in Tajikistan».
From the point of view of using these resources, which, according to him, are estimated at 527 billion kWh per year, it is possible to meet not only the needs of Tajikistan, but also the entire region for environmentally friendly electricity.
According to Safarzoda, in addition to huge hydropower resources, Tajikistan has rich solar and wind energy potential that has not yet been used.
«According to the analysis, the economically viable capacity of solar energy is 369.6 thousand MW, and the capacity of wind energy — 4.4 thousand MW», — he added.
According to the deputy minister, Tajikistan is the leader among Central Asian countries in the production of green energy. If all set goals are achieved, by 2032 the republic could become a country that produces 100% green energy.
It is worth noting that Tajikistan currently generates about 98% of its electricity from hydroelectric power plants and ranks sixth in the world in the use of green energy.
Earlier, company representative «Barki Tojik» Nozirjon Yodgori published an article saying that, according to the UN, Central Asian countries currently consume about 150 billion kWh of electricity, with the share of hydroelectric power plants being about 29%.
According to him, the total volume of hydropower reserves in Tajikistan is 4 times higher than the volume of electricity consumed in the countries of Central Asia.
He emphasized that the Rogun hydroelectric power station can benefit the entire region and an agreement has now been signed with Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan on the transfer of electricity from the hydroelectric power station to them.
