The complete modernization and technical re-equipment of the Kairakkum hydroelectric power station will be completed in September 2025. This became known during the visit of the Minister of Energy of Tajikistan Daler Juma to the site.
It is reported that 5 power units of the power plant have been repaired to date, and repair work on the last unit continues as planned.
As a result of the full implementation of the modernization project, the production capacity of the Kairakkum hydroelectric power station will increase from 126 MW to 174 MW. This is equivalent to an increase of 48 MW in capacity over previous figures.
The implementation of this project will improve the efficiency of the power plant and further improve the reliability of power supply to the northern regions of the country.
The Kairakkum hydroelectric power station is considered one of the most important energy facilities in the country and consists of 6 hydraulic units.
The hydroelectric power station was put into operation in 1956, back in Soviet times.
Reconstruction work began in 2020, however the COVID-19 pandemic prevented its timely completion.
The renovation took a long time, and in 5 years the hydraulic units № 4, 5 and 6 were completely modernized. The capacity of each of them increased from 19 to 29 MW.
This facility is considered one of the most important sources of electricity generation in Tajikistan after the Nurek, Rogun and Sarband hydroelectric power stations. The power plants are connected to the unified energy system of northern Tajikistan, energy is supplied to cities and regions of the Sughd region.
