Uzbekistan, Malaysia to expand cooperation in transport sector

Uzbekistan and Malaysia are considering collaboration in railway modernization, as SMH Rail, a leading Malaysian rolling stock manufacturer, has expressed interest in repairing decommissioned locomotives and wagons in Uzbekistan, according to Dunyo news agency.

Uzbek Ambassador Karomidin Gadoev recently visited the Zurah Industrial Park in Rasa, Selangor, where he met with SMH Rail’s chairman and managing director, Kuppusamy Narayanasamy, to discuss potential cooperation.

During the meeting, SMH Rail’s leadership emphasized their willingness to support Uzbekistan in refurbishing locomotives and railcars by leveraging their expertise and advanced technologies. The company also expressed readiness to provide locomotives on long-term leasing terms to Uzbekistan’s railway enterprises, including logistics centers and freight terminals.

An agreement was reached to establish a specialized system for knowledge exchange and training programs for Uzbek railway engineers and postgraduates at SMH Rail’s facilities.

Founded in 1999, SMH Rail specializes in manufacturing locomotives, wagons, and spare parts, as well as maintaining and modernizing decommissioned railway equipment. The company supplies products to 15 countries and operates manufacturing facilities in Malaysia, Tanzania, Thailand, and India.
