In his address at the first Central Asia-European Union summit on April 4, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev raised urgent concerns about the international community’s response to the ongoing challenges in Afghanistan.

“Regrettably, the global community underestimates all challenges emerging from the territory of this country [Afghanistan],” President Mirziyoyev stated, highlighting the need for a more comprehensive and proactive approach to Afghanistan’s instability.

The Uzbek leader emphasized the importance of actively engaging Afghanistan in regional economic processes. This, he argued, could be achieved through the implementation of investment and infrastructure projects, alongside efforts to rebuild the country’s social sector.

“We hope for understanding and support in facilitating the international community’s constructive dialogue with the Afghan authorities to meet the current commitments,” Mirziyoyev said.

The president also reiterated Uzbekistan’s commitment to continuing political consultations aimed at fostering the peaceful development of Afghanistan.

Mirziyoyev has long been an advocate for the global community to prioritize the Afghan issue, a stance he reaffirmed during his speech at the 78th session of the UN General Assembly in September 2023. At that time, he cautioned that neglecting Afghanistan would be a grave mistake, as it would leave the country to face its challenges alone once again.

In line with his consistent stance, Mirziyoyev noted that since assuming office, he has been dedicated to ensuring that Afghanistan receives all necessary support for its recovery. This includes efforts to restore peace, prevent an economic and humanitarian crisis, and promote Afghanistan’s reintegration as a vital part of the Central Asian region.
