Construction of the Orto-Tokoy hydroelectric power station, which was laid eleven months ago, is progressing according to the approved schedule. At the moment, approximately half of the total construction work has been completed. The Ministry of Energy of the Kyrgyz Republic reports that the completion of the project and the commissioning of the hydroelectric power station are expected in the first half of 2026.
The projected capacity of the Orto-Tokoy hydroelectric power station will be 21 MW. The implementation of this important energy facility is carried out by OJSC «Chakan HPP» in cooperation with the Chinese corporation China National Machinery Industry Corporation (CHMC). The total period allotted for the construction of the station is 24 months.
Over the past period, builders have erected both temporary and permanent access roads to the facility. A full-fledged construction camp has been equipped, including warehouses for materials and equipment, as well as concrete units. Power supply to the construction site has been provided. Significant progress has been made in driving the diversion tunnel: of the planned 928 meters, 727 meters have already been drilled. Work on the construction of retaining walls of the outlet canal has been completed, which required 868 cubic meters of concrete. The gates and three cones of the suction pipes were also installed. The access road to the water intake of the hydroelectric power station is completely ready.
Currently, specialists are carrying out reinforcement and formwork work in premises intended for operational control of the station and placement of the RU-10 kV switchgear. In parallel, steel supports are being installed inside the derivation tunnel. All the necessary permits for the construction of the PS-110/10 kV substation have already been received, and the preparatory stage of work has begun. At the same time, the process of agreeing with the mayor’s office of the city of Balykchy on the issue of allocating a land plot for the construction of an overhead power transmission line 110 kV overhead line continues.
It is expected that after commissioning, the Orto-Tokoy hydroelectric power station will be able to provide stable power supply to more than 14 thousand subscribers in the region. The initiative to build a hydroelectric power station was consolidated by a resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Kyrgyz Republic dated July 30, 2021, and the contract with CHMC Corporation for the implementation of the project was signed on March 24, 2023.
