The future cascade of hydroelectric power stations on the Uba River has acquired strategic importance

A cascade of hydroelectric power stations (HPPs) on the Uba River in the East Kazakhstan region is included in the list of strategically important water management structures, reports the press service of the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

«By government decree, the cascade of hydroelectric power stations being prepared for construction on the Uba River in the East Kazakhstan region is included in the list of water management structures of particular strategic importance», — the message says. 

The ministry’s statement indicates that the construction of a cascade of hydroelectric power stations will ensure reliable control of flood waters to reduce flood risks and protect populated areas in the region.

It is also noted that a complex of reservoirs with a total capacity of up to 500 million cubic meters will be formed for water supply to citizens and industrial facilities. According to the ministry, conditions will be created for watering over 3 thousand hectares of agricultural land and generating additional volumes of environmentally friendly electricity. 

«The project for the construction of a cascade of hydroelectric power stations on the Uba River provides for significant private investment. Hydroelectric power plants will generate additional volumes of electricity from renewable sources, which is in line with the national strategy for the development of a green economy», — said the Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation of the Republic of Kazakhstan Nurzhan Nurzhigitov.
