The capacity of the Rogun hydroelectric power station under construction will be increased by 180 MW

The installed capacity of the Rogun hydroelectric power station after its full completion will be 3,780 megawatts (MW), reports OJSC «Rogun hydroelectric power station. It is noted that the installed capacity of each of the six hydraulic units of this station will be 630 MW.

Мощность строящейся Рогунской ГЭС увеличат на 180 МВт

«This will produce an average of 14,400 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity per year», — the report emphasizes.

Let us recall that in 2024, electricity production by all stations in Tajikistan amounted to 22,428 gigawatt-hours.

Previously, it was expected that the installed capacity of the Rogun hydroelectric power station, after its complete completion, would be 3,600 MW. Six hydraulic units with a capacity of 600 MW each with radial-axial turbines will be installed in the hydroelectric power station building.

Further construction of the Rogun hydroelectric power station will be carried out in two phases:

—achieving by 2028 a dam height of 1.185 metres above sea level, an installed capacity of 1.660 MW (400 MW for 5/6 units, 1260 MW for 3/4 units);

— reaching a dam height of 1,300 meters above sea level by 2035; installed capacity of 3,780 MW (630 MW in all six blocks).

«The first phase, estimated at $3.39 billion, is financed by the ADB, AIIB, EIB, ISDB, Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development, OPEC Fund for International Development, Saudi Development Fund and other funding organizations», — the message emphasizes.

The complete completion of the station is estimated at approximately $6.3 billion.

Currently, the first two units of the Rogun hydroelectric power station are operating at low power. According to the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Tatarstan, in 2024 these units produced over 1.2 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity, which amounted to about 5.5% of the total electricity generation in the country last year.

According to official data, more than 40 billion somoni (about $4 billion) were allocated for the completion of Rogun, including through the sale of shares of OJSC «Rogun HPP» (890 million somoni), Eurobonds ($500 million), and the rest – at the expense of the state budget.
