ADB is again ready to provide $500 million for the construction of the Rogun hydroelectric power station

Support for investment projects in the energy sector and the continuation of the construction of the Rogun hydroelectric power station were discussed by the First Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Tajikistan Khokim Kholikzoda and the President of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) Masato Kanda, the State Committee for Investment and State Property Management of the Republic of Tajikistan reported.

The meeting took place within the framework of the 58th Annual Meeting of the Asian Development Bank.

The parties discussed various aspects of bilateral cooperation between Tajikistan and the Asian Development Bank.

Masato Kanda once again confirmed the bank’s readiness to provide $500 million for the construction of the Rogun hydroelectric power station.

It was noted that the timely implementation of the Rogun hydroelectric power station construction project will contribute to achieving the overall goals of providing cheap «green» electricity, sustainable water resources management, reducing the risks of floods and droughts, as well as reducing carbon emissions into the atmosphere. It will also create the conditions for accelerated digitalization, industrialization of the country and the creation of thousands of new jobs.

The parties also agreed to take into account in the new Partnership Strategy between Tajikistan and ADB for 2026-2030 the financing of priority investment projects in the fields of energy, transport, tourism, education, healthcare, agriculture and ecology, taking into account the digitalization of these industries.

It should be noted that the Asian Development Bank is one of Tajikistan’s key partners in development issues. Since 1998, the bank has financed more than 200 projects worth over US$2.7 billion. ADB currently supports 19 projects in the country, with a total value of more than $1 billion.
