The dam was washed out during the construction of a small hydroelectric power station on the Yuzhno-Fergana Main Canal in Uzbekistan. According to the Republic’s Ministry of Emergency Situations, about 100 houses were flooded as a result of the incident.
The Ministry of Water Resources of Uzbekistan confirmed that the flood in the Andijan region occurred as a result of the erosion of a dam in the upper reaches of the South Fergana Main Canal. A small hydroelectric power station is being built there to provide water to social institutions and agricultural lands in the Andijan and Fergana regions, as well as the border areas of Kyrgyzstan.
Residents of the mahallas of the Buvaidinsky district of the Andijan region who suffered as a result of flooding will receive appropriate compensation. This was reported by JSC «Uzbekhydroenergo».
The company recalled that the construction of a small hydroelectric power station «SFC-3» on the Yuzhno-Fergana Canal is being carried out in accordance with the resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Uzbekistan № VM-800 dated December 31, 2021. The project is being implemented at the expense of the Russian Financial Institute «MPR», and construction work is being carried out by the Russian company «Energosila» on a turnkey basis«.
The design capacity of the hydroelectric power station is 6.9 megawatts, with an annual electricity production volume of up to 33 million kilowatt-hours. The project built a water-retaining structure to regulate the water supply during the growing season. For this purpose, the main flow was temporarily redirected through a bypass channel.
However, the actual water flow in the bypass canal exceeded the calculated indicators: instead of the envisaged 60 cubic meters per second, the volume reached 70 cubic meters, which caused erosion of the right bank of the South Fergana Canal.
As emphasized in the message, all necessary measures are currently being taken to eliminate the consequences of the emergency. Repair and restoration work is being carried out on an accelerated basis with the involvement of the necessary equipment and working resources.
It is expected that by 14:00 on May 9 this year the channel will be fully restored and transferred to normal operation.
JSC «Uzbekhydroenergo» assured that residents whose houses and personal plots were damaged as a result of flooding will be provided with compensation for damage.
According to Uzhydromet, a total of 560 households were affected by the flooding.
