A €6mn project, implemented by the International Trade Centre (ITC), aims to support Turkmenistan’s accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO) and drive economic reforms. A €4.5mn initiative, implemented by GIZ, is dedicated to advancing renewable energy development, methane emissions reduction, and energy efficiency improvements.

European Commissioner for International Partnerships Jozef Síkela, who led discussions in Ashgabat, emphasized the EU’s support for Turkmenistan’s integration into regional and global economic networks. He also welcomed the country’s accession to the Global Methane Pledge, stressing the importance of sustainable energy solutions for economic resilience and environmental sustainability.

A key area of cooperation is transport connectivity, particularly the Trans-Caspian Transport Corridor, which enhances trade links between Central Asia and Europe. During meetings with President Serdar Berdimuhamedow, Deputy Chairs of the Cabinet of Ministers, and Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov, Commissioner Síkela reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to supporting infrastructure modernization and regulatory alignment.

During his visit to Turkmenbashi Port, a major trade hub, Síkela met with Mammethan Chakyev, Director General of the Agency for Transport and Communications, to discuss expanding port capacities and improving trade efficiency.

“We see Turkmenistan as a key partner in building stronger connections between Europe and Central Asia. Through the Global Gateway, and particularly the Trans-Caspian Transport Corridor, we are enabling faster and more secure trade routes. Our goal is to reduce trade times between Europe and Asia to just 15 days, making Turkmenistan a vital hub for commerce,” said Commissioner Síkela.

The Global Gateway strategy represents the EU’s commitment to bridging global investment gaps by promoting sustainable digital, energy, and transport infrastructure, while also fostering education and research cooperation. The initiative aims to mobilize €300bn in public and private investments from 2021 to 2027, strengthening resilient partnerships worldwide.

Commissioner Síkela’s visit stressed the EU’s long-term commitment to supporting Turkmenistan’s economic transformation, trade expansion, and environmental sustainability, reinforcing their growing cooperation under the Global Gateway framework.
